At the Victory Sports Ground the new cricket season opened featuring a new electronic scoreboard a big upgrade on last season, this in conjunction with the ability to live stream matches provides a big step forward for Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club.
Home captain Josh Cantrell won the toss and elected to bat on what proved a very good wicket well balanced with movement for bowlers and even bounce. The Bury opening pair started well scoring freely putting on 91 runs by the 12th over when Alex Maynard was out caught by Kyran Young for 34 off just 26 deliveries off Nico Boye fellow opener Justin Bishop was out in the 20th over for an excellent 59 caught by Mark Smith off Hamad Arshad. Archie Jones made 22 which included 2 x 6 being 3rd out but the platform had been provided. Harry Gallian had scored a hundred the previous week in a friendly but not this time he was out for just 3 the wickets of Josh Cantrell (15) and Tom Rash (3) followed in a mini collapse taking the score to 168.6 Ben Whittaker made a run a ball 17 before being out to Finlay Jones at 193.7.
Alex Cruickshank joined Fredrick Heldreich who on debut was batting with great distinction. Both players took the score to 258, Cruickshank fresh from playing in Australia batted well for his 20 off 34 deliveries. However it was Heldreich who played the games outstanding innings he was out to the last ball going for a big hit making 67. His 9th wicket partner Ben Harris had scored 16 off just 8 balls that included a big 6. Danny Edwards was the pick of the visitors bowlers with 3.49.
Bury’s total of 287.9 looked formidable and so it proved.
Frinton were restricted to 10 batsman after young William Farnace had fractured a finger in the pre match warm up. Frinton run rate was reduced by some good bowling from debutant Dan Shanks but it was the introduction of Cruickshank in the 11 over that made the break through trapping Boje lbw for 7. Freddie Waller had batted well but he was Cruickshank’s second wicket caught Cantrell for 43. Finlay Jones was caught Bishop off Whittaker soon after for 0 as it became 66.3. Young and visiting captain Michael Comber
looked to rebuild but both were out to the bowling of Cantrell. Young for 11 and Comber for 20. The Frinton innings was held together by Arshad who played very well, he was the final wicket on 170.9 lbw to Heldreich in the 39th over. A good bowling performance by the home attack sharing the wicket two for Cantrell, Cruickshank and Heldreich and one each for Rash, Whittaker and Harris.
Matches between these two teams are always played in a good atmosphere with Michael Comber having played for Bury St Edmunds and remains a firm favourite with the home club.

Bury’s 2nd team travelled to near neighbours Woolpit to play their 1st team having won promotion last season it was an awakening to playing in the Two Counties Division One and illustrated the significant gap that exists between the two divisions. Bury were not at full strength and suffered at the hands of Merlin Stamper who despite being dropped went on to make a magnificent 207 not out. George Tillbrook added 67 but it was Stamper who set the platform in a formidable total of 340.3.
Bury were bowled out for 94 with captain James McKinney making 18, Oliver Riddick 26 and young Wilf Frost 15, Harry Bevan taking 4.9 was the pick of the home bowlers.

A very good start to the season for the 3rd team away to Felixstowe 2nds. Visiting captain Danny Harrison won the toss elected to bowl and proceeded to remove the first 3 home batsman without any scoring the first 2 before a run was scored.
From 7.3 Felixstowe did well to recover being 134 all out in the 40th over. Adam Sheldrake top scoring with 43. Danny Harrison taking 5.25. 2 wickets for Kevin Podbury and one each for Vjjawal Verma, Imogen Grove and Toby Lines although taking no wickets Vivek Rajagopal bowled 5 overs for just 6 runs.
Burys reply revolved around the evergreen Simon Aldous who carried his bat for 53 not out he was supported by Vivek (19) Ammad Hassan Fida (17) and Max Harrison with 24 not out in a final total of 135.4 in 36 overs.
