Cricket August 15/16

David Barker

Plenty of runs scored with some outstanding cricket.

Bury St Edmunds and Swardeston are the only clubs to have played in the East Anglian Premier League since it commenced in 1999 the two met again at the Victory Ground on Saturday, Bury won the toss on a well prepared surface, Josh Cantrell chose to bat his side scoring a total of 295.5 Will Routledge making 52, Harry Gallian 82 before being run out, Cantrell 39, before an unbeaten partnership for the 5th wicket of 89 involved Tom Rash with 44 not out and Ben Whittaker with 52 off just 29 deliveries. For the 2nd week running Bury have posted a good first innings score but the dry conditions and fast outfield make defending scores difficult.
Swardeston looked in trouble at 138.5 as Suffolk bowler Dan Shanks had taken two early wickets. But Jonah Wilks batted superbly for 116 supported by Peter Lambert (72) as the visitors reached the target remaining in 3rd place a point off the lead.
The big news during the week was Frinton’s decision not to contest the play off’s leaving one of the winners of the feeder leagues to take their place.
With relegation decided it becomes a very exciting race for the title as next week with 4 clubs within two points of one another. Horsford host Mildenhall, Copdock should win at home to Frinton, at the top Swardeston host Sawston. Away from relegation fears Sudbury play at home to Bury St Edmunds.

Bury fielded a strong 2nd team away to Clacton and produced a very good display winning the toss and batting first Bury were dominant with the bat despite losing James Sturgeon early for 11. It became a batting masterclass from Justin Bishop scoring 111 that included 15 x 4, Archie Jones (44) gave good support along with James McKinney (47) Oscar Black (15) and an unbeaten 5th wicket partnership of 43 from Zayan Imam (23) and Tom Davey (22) both not out. In a total of 325.5 off 50 overs. Early wickets from Isaac Walshe and Adam Kizis proceeded an amazing Clacton collapse as Sam Aldous produced the figures of 3.1.10.5 taking all of the last 4 wickets for just 3 runs. In fact the last 6 wickets fell for 12 runs. Bury remain in 11th place as Maldon had a good win, it could be the bottom 3 all are relegated unless the league winners win promotion, but all is to play for, next Saturday we wish Joe Corder well with his wedding.
Bury’s 3rd team continued their up and down season batting first they scored 136.9 against West Bergholt. Ammad Hassan Fida making 42 and Vivek Rajagopal 23, Owen Grisby and Krishna Sinha 19 each. Joe Smith taking 5.41 for the home side. Thanks to an unbeaten 80 from Rasitha Madenayake the home side won by 7 wickets.

Bury’s 4th team has a close encounter on the Victory Grounds second pitch as Bury scored 220.7. against Tuddenham’s 2nd team Viq Ahmed made an excellent 91 and Manau Raghavendra 45 but the visitors won with 7 wickets down with a two overs remaining Edward Curtis making 86 not out with Jala Pathan taking 5.53 on another good surface only possible due to the ground staff hard work watering both pitches during the week.

On Sunday Bury visited Hadleigh and provided another batting master class this time by Zayan Imam who opened the innings and scored an unbeaten 180 that included 26 x 4 and 2 x 6. John Hartwright scored 53 and his son Sam 31 not out in a total of 324.3 off 40 overs.
The home side were all out for 190 Harry Foxwell making 62 Joshua Kovacic-Graham taking 4.33 and two wickets each for Steve Graham and Hamid Khan.
