A very hot weekend for cricket with a draw for the 1st team and good wins for the 2nd team and Sunday side.
On Saturday at the Victory Ground there followed a run feast after Frinton captain and former Bury player Michael Comber won the toss and unsurprisingly elected to bat, with double batting points for reaching 250 in 60 overs in this 120 over format it is the best option because looking at the flat dry pitch bowling a team out would be remarkable.
So it proved as Frinton openers Hamad Arshad (93) and Jayden Goodwin (121) put on 175 for the first wicket as the home bowlers toiled in the heat Arshad was out on 175 caught by Oliver Riddick off Alex Cruickshank and Goodwin caught Alex Maynard off the bowling of Alistair Allchin with the score on 246 the score had been well contained with Justin Bishop’s 7 overs going for just 32 but in the heat and very fast outfield Ronnie McKenna (79 from 55 ) and Kyran Young (58 from 42) piled on the runs late in the innings Comber declaring after 62 overs with the score on 356.2.
Bury lost Bishop early and Will Routledge to an exceptional slip catch by Charlie Bennett off Jila Pervez for 32 Harry Gallian despatched his first ball for a delightful 4 but was out for 17 on 83 Bury tried to reach the large score but at 97.5 it was probably time to play for a draw as conditions were better for bowling, after Goodwin removed 3 of the middle order Alex Maynard played a patent 30 as Bennett bowled with real pace and bounce on a pitch giving little to the bowlers. The star batting performance for the home side came from William Jarman batting at number three he entered the fray in the 5th over and batted with assurance for 205 minutes remaining 75 not out off 152 deliveries. He was grateful to Ben Whittaker who decided that Bury needed the maximum batting points and scored a cameo 63 off just 39 deliveries as Frinton spread the field, it was a day that once the ball passed the fielder it reached the boundary. Bury finished on 256.8.
Bury’s 2nd team maintained their impressive season with a narrow win away to Witham’s 2nd side, Bury scored 253.3 the star performer was captain James McKinney who opened the batting with James Sturgeon (41) and batted unbeaten through the 45 overs he received good support from Alan Barker (11) Ned Stanton (29) and Jack Howland who scored 49 not out from just 28 deliveries. McKinney’s outstanding captains knock of 103 not out came from 128 deliveries in steering heat no wonder he was feeling the strain the next day. For the home side Oliver Cooke took 2.33 off 9 overs.
Witham had a very good start and at times looked likely to hunt down the target, the innings was built around Jack Bamford with 104 from 120 deliveries before being stumped by James Sturgeon the second wicket partnership with Philip Gray (49) was caught by Joe Corder with the score on xxx Corder bowled well with 3.38 and Sam Aldous who we welcomed for his first game of the summer taking 2.46 however it was that man McKinney who removed Bamford it proved a close call as Witham needed 20 off the last over but fell 4 runs short on 249.8.
Bury remain 2nd in the Two Counties League Division Two and next week host leaders Mistley with Haverhill and Sudbury in close contention.
A difficult afternoon for captain Sam Pennell on the second ground as Bury’s 3rd team hosted Melton St Audry’s in Division 6, short of the fielding compliment the visitors scored 300.9 on a flat track and fast outfield Tom Sidhu scored 100 before being caught by Dilon Bhavsar off Pennell Chris Furmston added 75. Two wickets for Pennell and Bhavsar.
Bury were able to provide a full complement of batsman as they scored a respectable 225.9. Zyan Imam making 23 Krisha Sinha 69 Ujjawal Verma 63 Pennell 21 not out and Dilon Bhavsar also not out on 19.
Sunday saw the main cricket pitch achieve a total of 1119 runs from a total of just under 200 overs at 46.6 runs per wicket.
Bury’s Sunday side won the toss and batted first against Castle Hedingham scoring 271.4 off the allocated 45 overs the star performer was Alan Barker with a 100 with excellent support from Zyan Imam (64) Ned Stanton (29) and Nitin Modi (24) Dean King taking 2.20
Castle Hedingham was going well with Josh Lecompte scoring 99 before the entry of Imam bowling his leg spin having Lecompte caught by wicket keeper Simon Aldous who kept wicket well. Jack Fraser-Andrews followed for 57 having been run out to some very good fielding. Sam Hartwright bowled with good pace for his 2.47 but it was the bowling of young Imam that changed the course of the game with 3 wickets for just 5 runs as the visitors were 227 all out.
A feature of the weekend was the very good spirit in which all the games were played, Bury have good relations with Frinton and Melton much enjoyed their visit to a premier league ground and on Sunday the Stanton family seemed to know as many of the opponents as they did the home team.
On Wednesday Bury’s second team played Battisford in the T 20 Suffolk Cup Plate Battisford scored 170 with 50’s each retired from Harvey Skinner and Tom Sillett. Bury scored 158 in reply with Zyan Imam scoring 50 retired and 34 from sam Harrison and 39 from Max Harrison .
