Bury St Edmunds had two good wins on Saturday with the 1st team winning the Thurlow Nunn EAPL match against Mildenhall and the 2nd team going top of the Two Counties League Division Two.
On Saturday at the Victory Ground Bury captain Josh Cantrell won the toss and being damp and cloudy it was a good toss to win, he invited the visitors Mildenhall to bat and this proved the correct decision as two wickets were taken by Ben Harris and Tom Rash with just 10 runs on the board Rash followed on with the wicket of Darren Ironside for 18 caught by Will Jarman on 41 runs. It was good to have Alex Cruickshank back bowling after a long term back injury and he bowled Jack Potticary making it 69.4. By lunch further wickets taken by Justin Bishop, Ben Whittaker and Rash had the visitors struggling on 106.7. After the break it was Kc Cariappa who took the attack to the home side with some decisive blows scoring 47 off just 26 deliveries before being well caught by Cantrell on the long on boundary off the bowling Harris. The partnership with Tristan Blackledge (40) added 82 runs but Jack Loveday was out first ball and the innings complete on 198 in 49 overs.
3 wickets each for Rash and Harris and 2 for Cruickshank with Justin Bishop bowling 14 overs for just 30 runs that included 5 maidens and a wicket.
This was the seasons 6th match now on a 120 over format hence Bury had potentially 71 overs to score the required runs.
Will Routledge and Bishop formed a new opening partnership Bishop was out for 14 with the score on 38 and Jarman soon followed however Routledge and Harry Gallian took their time and against some good bowling gradually moved forward, Gallian was out for 25 off 37 deliveries just before tea. The after tea period was clearly crucial as Mildenhall tried in vain for the important breakthrough. Cantrell played a series of excellent strokes scoring 58 not out from 68 deliveries that included 9 x 4. It was however Routledge who formed the basis of the innings carrying his bat for an excellent 89 not out from 144 deliveries. Cariappa bowled well with 15 overs 1.45. This was an important win for the home side.
Bury’s 2nd team travelled to Kelveden and Feering the home team lost the toss and batted first also losing early wickets but reached 174.9 Lee Scott remained not out on 43 Richard Nunn was caught and bowled Oliver Riddick for 41 and Edward Pope caught Henry Baldock bowled James McKinney for 35. It was some swift bowling from Hamidullah Kharoti with 3 wickets for 19 runs off 7 overs that made a significant impact, he was well supported by Josh Owen who took 2.27 off 9 overs again with some real pace.
Bury added 33 for the first wicket before Max Whittaker was run out for 5. James Sturgeon who is in fine form this season scored 26 Alan Barker (31) was 3rd out on 99 and although James McKinney (26) and Riddick (9) were also out it was Owen this time with the bat who remained not out on 52 that saw the team to a very good win almost 10 overs to spare and a place at the summit.
Bury’s 3rd team visited IPSCOL who batted first with a number of players away, the home team scored 295.7 with Kishor Kumar Sadhak scoring 107 not out and Sridhar Munendramani 67. Alex Malcom and Vivek Rajagopal taking 2 wickets each.
