Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club commenced the season in outstanding fashion with three wins and several outstanding performances.
The 1st team opened the Thurlow Nunn East Anglian Premier League campaign with an exciting and close win against Ashmanhaugh and Barton Wanderers from North Norfolk.
The Bury team contained four debutants Ben Harris and Harry Gallian who have joined from Saffron Walden, Tom Davey has moved from Garboldisham having played in the Norfolk Alliance and Will Jarman from Sydney Australia who has followed the Radhakrishnan brothers who have played at the club for the last two years. The young Australians provide all round support to the club and further their early cricketing careers.
Home captain Josh Cantrell won the toss and elected to bat in remarkably dry conditions for April, Alex Maynard scored 16 off 13 deliveries and was first out on 27, Jarman and Will Routledge added 56 before the latter was out lbw for 29, Gallian made 9 and there followed a 59 run partnership as Justin Bishop scored a patent 33 off 59 deliveries, Justin now representing England at Over 40 level will be an excellent addition. On 162.5 Routledge was out for 64 runs from 100 deliveries an excellent innings that provided a good platform, Cantrell added 37 from 30 and Ben Whittaker 28 from 26 as Bury completed their 50 overs on 242.9. 3 wickets for Joe Everett and Nuwan Jayasena and 2 for Joe Flatt
The visitors got off to a good start adding 41 before Nathan Shaw was out caught Alex Cruickshank off the left arm pace of Davey. On 58 Harris took his first wicket for the club bowling Tristan Elam for 13. On 74 came the first champaign moment of the day as Cruickshank swooped to hit the stumps from long range accounting for the wicket of Mitchell Van Buuren. Jarman got into the act his first over included a 6 and the wicket of Zak Tribe the next ball caught by Harris. Opener Jordan Everett (34) fell to Harris and at 110.6 Thomas Harris was caught and bowled by Jarman, Bury looked odds on for an early finish but Jacob Lintott had other ideas as he singled handed almost forced an away win coming in at the fall of the 4th wicket Lintott farmed the strike remarkably well as wickets fell, two to Cantrell, The 9th wicket fell at 189 due to a mix up with the late order batsman. Lintott in fact faced the last 40 deliveries as neither tail ender faced a ball it looked like Lintott might win the game with 8 needed and 8 deliveries remaining but he struck Harris into the deep for Cantrell to swoop low to take an outstanding catch, champaign moment number two for the home team in a very good game of cricket. Lintott scored 98 from 94 deliveries.
A strong 2nd team travelled to Kesgrave and batted first losing James Sturgeon early but Zayan Imam added 51, Max Whittaker 65 before Ned Stanton came in to provide a batting master class along with Archie Jones, the runs flowed to all areas of the ground. Stanton making 166 not out probably the highest score of the day in local cricket Jones finished 62 not out in a total of 376.3.
Kesgrave scored 206.8 with two wickets each for Tom Rash (nursing a damaged finger) and Oliver Riddick and a wicket each for Joe Corder and Adam Kizis, Stanton came on to bowl taking a wicket and Whittaker a run out in a very good win under the leadership of James McKinney.
Bury’s 3rd team hosted Mildenhall’s 4th team and scored 209.8 Ammad Fida made 52 and Sam Pennell 50 from 51 deliveries a debut for Vjjawal Verman who is a welcome addition to the club. Bury felt they had a good bowling attack and so it proved captain Danny Harrison taking 4.28 Vivek Rajagopal 1.20 off just 9 overs and Jacob Meredith 0.21 off 8 overs. Mildenhall finished their 45 overs on 179.7 with James Taylor top scoring on 42 and Willan Khan (31) and Lou Hardy 30 not out. Bury winning by 30 runs.
