The unpredictable nature of the Thurlow Nunn East Anglian Premier League was highlighted on Saturday as the top two lost and bottom two won. Leaders Sawston and Babraham are just 21 points clear after losing at home to Sudbury and second placed Copdock losing at home to Witham.
Bury St Edmunds lost at home to Downham Stowe a team they had beaten earlier in the season but this time the visitors batted first on a pitch unpredictable due to the heavy rain the day before. The first wicket fell on 8 runs as William Jarman took the catch off Alastair Allchin the Wilcox brothers followed taking the score to 55.3 and at 88.5 Bury were in a good position Hudson De Lucchi was out lbw to Alex Crucikshank for 45. Ben Harris took 2 catches off Josh Cantrell the first a one handed effort. William Denny scored an excellent 62 before being caught by Allchin off Harris making it 167.8 Sachinda Colombage added a useful 33 taking the score to 193. The feeling was this was a good score in the conditions and so it proved Bury lost openers Will Routledge and Alex Maynard with just 13 scored, last time they put on 229!
Bury were soon 31.4 losing Josh Cantrell was a big blow but Justin Bishop and William Jarman stabilised the score and with rain forecast they gradually got ahead of the Duckworth Lewis predicted score method in the 31st over the rain came down and players went off for a second time, had it not cleared Bury would have won but when the players came back Jarman was out for 44 on 128.5 and Bishop followed for an excellent 62 lbw to the overseas leg spinner Colombage with the score on 141 still 53 runs short of the target, batting was not easy and Bury lost their final 4 wickets ending on 157 a result that leaves the club in 8th place but it is very congested at the bottom of the EAPL.
The bottom two Mildenhall and Ashmanhaugh both won so who ends in that position and is in the play-off is still to be decided.
