Tough day at Frinton Great win for 2nds

Bury St Edmunds travelled to Frinton in the Thurlow Nunn East Anglian Premier League on Saturday, it was clear looking at the green pitch that seam bowling would hold the key and that the toss was important, home captain Michael Comber won the toss and had no hesitation in bowling, the Frinton attack contained two Essex contracted players Charlie Bennett and Mackenzie Jones supported by former Zimbabwean test player Doug Hondo, Bury had no answer to the seam pace and seam movement and were bowled out for 57. Frinton scored the target with 3 wickets down. In the process Frinton leap frogged Bury in the EAPL table. The final round of matches will provide the tightest finish ever in deciding which of 5 clubs might take part in the end of season play-offs which are due the next day.
Bury have 251 points, Great Witchingham 252, Frinton 255, Ashmanhaugh 266 and Mildenhall 272 . In will be a very close finish.
Bury’s 2nd team won convincingly at home against Witham’s 2nd team Witham batted first and scored 210 Oliver Cooke top scored with 53 Jack Bamford made 49 and Luke Goldstone 38. Josh Owen bowled with good pace taking 3.40, Oliver Riddick with his leg spin secured 2.26 and Jacob Meredith bowled well at the close with 3.24.
Witham had batted well and were in the game as Bury lost early wickets Archie Jones (13) followed by Zyan Imam unlucky to be run out at the non-strikers end for 5, having been 84.4 it was an outstanding partnership between Ned Stanton and Riddick that won the game both survived dropped catches but they put on 127 for the 4th wicket with Stanton (113) and Riddick (51) both unbeaten the win secures 2nd place in the Two Counties Division and promotion providing the 1st team retain their EAPL status.
The match was well umpired by Adrian Osbourne as the only league umpire on the day. This has been a remarkable season for Bury’s 2nd team well captained by James McKinney with credit to a number of players including James Sturgeon the leading run scorer.
Bury’s 3rd team visited Melton St Audrey’s and scored 130 Hassan Fida scoring 32. Jala Pathan 27 and Eve Aldous 15. The home team scored the target with the two wickets taken by Michael Faulkner.
Greene King Players of the Week Ned Stanton and Oliver Riddick
On Sunday Bury play in the final of the Suffolk Cup against Sudbury a 3.00 pm start at Bardwell commencing after the Final of the Suffolk Plate.
Next week is the final round of Saturday league matches The 1st team host Witham, 2nd team play away to champions and 3rd team are at home to Braintree’s 2nd side.
