Excellent wins for 2nds 3rds and on Sunday
The penultimate week of the East Anglian Premier League season featured three teams in title contention 2 of whom Sawston and Copdock met at Copdock’s home ground. Visitors Sawston won the toss and elected to bat scoring 229.8 in their 50 overs. Copdock reached in reply 176.
Bury St Edmunds visited the other title contenders playing away to Horsford the visitors won the toss and batted but were never able to look like reaching a competitive score losing wickets at regular intervals. Daniel Shanks top scored with 36 not out in a final partnership with Haydn Smith which included 3 x 6.Neil Hornbuckle and Ryan Findlay each taking 3 wickets. Ben Whittaker had Hornbuckle out without scoring and Will Woodhead soon after at 20.2 but any chance of the visitors making inroads were dispelled as Jc Malherbe (60) and Jordan Neil 55 not out saw the home side to a 7 wicket win. Whittaker taking 3.51 off 7 overs.
These results leave Sawston and Horsford tied at the top on 419 points and next week it really is a title show down as both top teams meet at Sawston.
Woolpit secured the Two Counties League Title with a comprehensive win at home to Coggeshall. The day commenced with the news the other title contenders Halstead had their game away to Worlington cancelled due to the state of the outfield.
It proved an important day for Bury St Edmunds 2nd team who beat Mildenhall’s 2nd side by 7 wickets. The match played with in a very good atmosphere, the match commenced by Mildenhall winning the toss and electing to field. The early wickets of Rhys Paltry and Ben Palmer were taken by Joe Corder and Sam Aldous but the important wicket of Ex Bury player Tim Catley proved important, his quality has not diminished but James McKinney made the break through with Adam Kizis bowling Murtaza Hassain both out on 66.The important wickets later were taken by Zayan Imam with 3 wickets in 4 deliveries two stumped by James Sturgeon and the other a catch by Graham Napier. Harrison Milner had battled well being last out caught by Sean Park off Oliver Riddick for 36 in a final total of 164.
Bury certainly did not have it easy as they lost both Max Whittaker and Sean Park with just 3 runs scored but there is no better man for a crisis than Napier who batted well, he was out for 14 with the score at 46.3. James Sturgeon was joined by Archie Jones and they really had to buckle down to some very good bowling with young players Liam Ticehurst and Alex Collings showing real quality but gradually the two batsmen overcame the attack, Sturgeon scoring 77 off 100 deliveries with 9 x 4 and 1 x 6. Jones ending on 66 not out off 82 deliveries including 11 x 4. Bury ending with a 6 on 170.3.
The result lifted Bury St Edmunds out of the possible 3 team relegation zone as bottom club beat Maldon and Clacton lost to Wivenhoe. Next Saturday Bury travel to Maldon in the knowledge that a win retains their league Division One status.
An important win for Bury’s 3rd team who moved to 4th in League Division 7 Copdock’s 3rd team scored 202.6 thanks in the main to Dan Skinner scoring 81 not out and Jim Menzies 42. Seamus Gallagher taking 3.11 and Vivek Rajagopal 2.37. In reply Bury openers Simon Cruse and Sam Harrison added 77 for the 1st wicket Harrison scoring 44 and Cruse 32 but at 93.3 the team needed a partnership which was provided by Ammad Hassan Fida who scored 50 supported by Max Harrison (17) with Jacob Meredith batting well to take the score to the target making 41 not out. The team really needs to be in a higher division, and a win away next week might help that quest.
On Sunday Bury consolidated second place in the Hunts Bats League Division Two winning away to Long Melford. Bury posted 251.6 Zayan Imam scoring 57, Arlo Bhavsar 21, John Hartwrigh 53 and his son Sam 51.
Long Melford made 175.6 thanks to Karl Storey scoring 81 not out. Hamidullah Karoti taking 2.17 off 8 overs and Krishna Sinha 2.44..

On Sunday the club were pleased to host 11 teams in a Ladies Soft ball tournament with the ground literally full of women and girls enjoying cricket, a busy day for those involved but the venue is perfect for such a large competition that delivers a great deal of cricket in a friendly family atmosphere.
Next week the final round of Fixtures as Bury host Mildenhall in the EAPL. The 2nd team are away to Maldon, 3rd team away to Elmsteads 2nd team on Sunday Bury are at home to Acton in the final Sunday League match of the season.
On Sunday September 20th Bury play Sudbury in the final of the Suffolk Cup a T20 match being played at Mellis commencing around 2.30 pm
