The 1st XI travelled to reigning Thurlow Nunn East Anglian Premier League winners Sawston and Babraham, despite Josh Cantrell, Ali Allchin and Ben Harris unavailable this was still a strong team, captain Tom Rash won the toss and elected to bat and probably regretted it because the visiting top order batsman had no answer to Calum Guest, it was not a bad wicket but to be 18.6 after an hour was disappointing to say the least.
Justin Bishop is certainly a man for a crisis and he and Ben Whittaker (25) took the score to 71 before Bishop was out for 22 after 68 deliveries. Alex Cruickshank joined Whittaker and they battled with greater commitment, Cruickshank has concentrated on his batting after an injury prevented his bowling, after a big score last week for the 2nd team batted very well, Whittaker was out on 116.8 and enter Oliver Riddick often underestimated as a batsman, again moving up from the 2nd team he soon lost Cruickshank on 128.9 to a run out but with Tom Davey who last season on occasions opened the batting for Garboldsham in the Norfolk Alliance added a further 48 runs and remained unbeaten Riddick on 43 from 49 deliveries and Davey on 7, after poor starts it is always important to bat out the overs and although the total of 176.9 was not ideal there were two batting points and a remarkable recovery not to bowled out. Guest had the superb figures of 10.6.7.5 The home side did not have all their own way in reply with Ben Whittaker taking the wicket of Yousuf Choudhary (5) and Tom Rash following up with Guest (9) and Ethan Rice (28) at 51.3 there was a glimmer of hope for the visitors but Ben Claydon (53) and Henry Wilson (28 not out) reached the target with Ben Whittaker taking a second wicket and Justin Bishop taking one.
Bury’s 2nd team made it three wins in three at home to Abberton on what proved a superb pitch for batting James Sturgeon (75) opened with Sean Park and put on 176 for the first wicket Alan Barker joined Park who was second out on 251 scoring a terrific 133 from 111 deliveries to set up a strong final total of 346.4. Josh Owen scoring 64 off just 39 deliveries and Barker 27.Keith Hammond taking 2.66. Abberton also batted well losing their first wicket for 88 Elliot Mann bowled by Owen, Hammond was second out for 34 on 156 caught by Sturgeon off Tom Wright who followed up with Johan Kritzinger bowled first ball. Gregan Savill batted well for 73 before being bowled by James McKinney at 209 with 4 wickets down the visitors sensed they were in with a chance but Park came on to bowl and seized the moment taking 4 wickets for 49 in 8 overs Owen took a second as Abberton finished on 290.9. Bury winning by 56 runs.
Burys 3rd team batted first at home to East Bergholt’s 2nd team scoring 230.7 Sam Harrison not for the first time was out in the 90’s this time an excellent 92 he was well supported by fellow opener Vivek Rajagopal (24) Simon Aldous (32) Brad Bosman (38) in the 45 allocated overs. East Bergholt were all out for 172 in 35 overs Nick Patel scoring 49 and Chris Huntley 32, three catches for Aldous and good bowling from Max Harrison 3.27 Atharva Modi 2.12 Janak Raj 2.54 with Hamidullah Kharoti going for just 20 runs off 7 overs. Bury winning by 58 runs.
A mixture of youth and experience took the field for Bury’s 4th team away to Tuddenham’s 2nd team Bury opened with father and daughter Jamie and Imogen Grove (11), Jamie scored 47 with Ben Baldock (19) Michael Faulkner (45) scoring well but the star performance came from Vic Ahmed scoring 96 off 88 deliveries in a total of 255.8 A.Woodward taking 4.64 for the home team. Tuddenham started strong scoring 51 for the 1st wicket but Alex Macom bowled well removing the next three batsmen Ben Coles having been second out being caught by Imogen Grove for 53 Ahmed came on to bowl Dan Moss for 46. A first senior wicket for Alexa Melton and sound bowling for youngsters Jack Lee and Leo Park. Malcom finished with 4.42 off his 10 overs as the home team were all out for 191.
A disappointing afternoon for Bury’s Sunday 1st team on a remarkably placid pitch which saw 1270 runs scored over the two days. Bury scored 315 for 5 in their 40 overs with openers James McKinney (75) and James Sturgeon (48) giving a solid platform, John Hartwright scored a superb 120 with Nitin Modi adding 30. F.Quelch taking 2.16 off his two overs. Acton lost two early wickets but the partnership that followed was of the highest standard Ram Ram scoring 145 not out and Cameron Stace 117 as Acton snatched a good win with an over remaining.
Unfortunately the Sunday 2nd team game away to Hadleigh had to be conceded with a number of players now not playing on Sundays it is going to be difficult fielding two teams, if anyone wishing to play Sunday cricket please contact the club.
