Bury St Edmunds travelled to Mildenhall on Saturday to face a team that finished 3rd in the East Anglian Premier League last season

Bury St Edmunds travelled to Mildenhall on Saturday to face a team that finished 3rd in the East Anglian Premier League last season, overnight rain had left wet patches on the square which resulted in a delayed start, in these conditions winning the toss is always important and Bury’s young stand-in captain Ben Seabrook made the correct call and elected to bowl, starting at 1.45 for a reduced 40 over game the Mildenhall openers Joe Read and Danny Wilson started in positive mood but 17 balls into the innings down came the rain with the score 21.0.

The delay meant the game was further reduced to 35 overs on the restart the openers remained positive but George Loyd bowled Wilson for 18 on 39 and his partner Read was caught by wicketkeeper Alfie Marston for 29 ( 4x4 and 1 x 6) with the score on 54, there followed a significant collapse as Alistair Allchin had Ben Shepperson caught by Ben Curran and overseas professional Ankit Sharma caught by Marston suddenly it became 55.4 and the confidence had drained out of the home team. Sean Cooper used his considerable experience to remove 3 players Ollie Lovejoy, Tom Rash and Jon Allen and Daniel Moriarty bowled both Tristan Blackledge and Jack Loveday to reduce the home side to 79.9 the final wicket was a catch by Cooper off Ben Seabrook for a total of 93 in 29.2 overs, the bowlers made the most of the conditions Allchin taking 7.0.36.2 Loyd 7.1 27.2 Moriarty 7.2.9.2 and Cooper 7.3.6.3.

Bury openers Max Whittaker and Alfie Marston played with considerable restraint against tight bowling Ankit Sharma the Indian Premier League player bowled 7 overs for just 9 runs Whittaker was first out in the most unlucky way as Marston’s drive was deflected by bowler Tristan Blackledge onto the non-striker's stumps with the score on 40. Marston followed stumped by Ollie Lovejoy for 32 off Hugo Douglas the innings included 5 x 4. Ben Seabrook followed caught by Danny Wilson off Jon Allen for 0 on 61 with Moriarty following on 71. 18 year old Justin Broad batted in a positive way but was out for 29 giving Allen his 3rd wicket at 78.5 Bury still needed 17 runs with but Josh Cantrell took the aggressive route scoring 15 runs off just 6 balls to see Bury St Edmunds to victory with a team of young players 8 of whom are under 21, a promising start to the season as the club reached the dizzy heights of 3rd in the EAPL.
